History of the Faculty of Economics

 

The Faculty of Economics of the University of Miskolc was founded in September 1987. The page informs You about facts and events about the roughly 25-year-long history of our Faculty, about the development process that raised Miskolc to an important basis of Hungarian economic and business education.

 

1987-1990

In 1987 the Institute of Economics of the Technical University for Heavy Industry in Miskolc founded a college (bachelor)-level education for business students. The head of the institute was Prof. Dr. János Susánszky who started the education with four departments.

 

 

 

 

Department of Economics

The founding head of the department was Mrs.Tóth, Dr. Gizella Sikora. It was re-established as the
Department of Applied Economics in September 1990 and in 1993 Dr. Iván Fekete became the new head.

Department of Accounting and Statistics
Founding head: Prof. Dr. Lajos Besenyei

Department of Business Economics
Founding head: Prof. Dr. János Czabán. Since 2001 the head of the department is Prof. Dr. Mária Illés.

Department of Finance
Dr. István Vékás founded the department in 1988.

Other departments and institutes of the University besides the Institute of Economics took part in the education. Most important of them was the Institute of Social Sciences headed by Prof. Aladár Nagy, DSc, including the Department of Economic Theory, the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Politology and the Department of Sociology. The Institute of Mathematics took a major part in the education as well.


1990-1994

In July 1990 the Institute of Economics became the Faculty of Economics of the University of Miskolc

New departments were established within the Faculty:

In 1990 the Faculty started the university-level education by applying the 3+2 years educational structure, in the framework of which university and college level diplomas were issued in „Specialization in Business Economics".
In 1992 an experimental MBA program in English language was established in the framework of a three-year-long cooperation with the Management School of Bradford University.
26 June 1993 was the day of awarding the first university-level diplomas to the first 85 graduate students of the Faculty.
In September 1993 the Ph.D. program of the Faculty was founded. The head of the „Doctoral School of Enterprise Theory and Practice” was Prof. Aladár Nagy, DSc (Economics).

Two new departments were established besides the existing 6 departments of the Faculty:

Department of Marketing
Founded in 1994, founding head: Dr. István Piskóti

Department of Regional Economics
Established in 1996, founding head: Prof. Dr. György Kocziszky

Since September 1995, in their fourth and fifth academic year students are educated in different specializations. Five specializations are offered: Specialization on European Union Studies, Specialization in Marketing, Specialization in Management, Specialization in Finance and Accounting and Specialization in Entrepreneurship.

Since 1992 the 3+2 years educational structure was replaced by a universal five-year-long education, while the opportunity for graduate students of other colleges was offered to continue their studies at our Faculty.

Since the academic year of 1995/96 the credit system was established in the framework of our Ph.D. program.
